Living in Karachi,
Pakistan's 15-million
people mega-city,
Nadeem and Jameela
Qazi were deeply
stirred by the tragedy of
a huge Christian slum
in the north of the city
on the edge of the
desert. Hundreds of
Christian children did
not go to school -- they
simply could not afford the fees -- and without
education life was bleak.
Nadeem bought the land and built a simple
building with funds gathered from his supporters
overseas. When the funds dried up, Starfish
Asia stepped in, undertaking to guarantee the
teachers' salaries, and also renovating the
building to make it more suitable for the 300
children who flock from all over the colony to
attend this fine Christian school.
The School is directed by
Anser Javaid, a local
resident who is both
compassionate and
capable. His vision for the
school is that it provide a
beacon of hope in an
otherwise barren landscape. His wife is also a
teacher in the school.

Changing lives
Sitara comes from a very poor family in the
Colony. Her ambition is to be a teacher, so
she teaches the Junior classes in the
mornings and attends the Holy Shepherd High
School in the evenings -- thus earning a salary
to support her family and gaining an education.
Her brother and younger sister also attend the
school. She aims to become a doctor!
Sitara was married in 2010 to another teacher
at the school.
